Urban Garden

A complex property refurbishment led to this garden being created on top of a new basement room. With a maximum planting depth of one metre, steps up from the basement, a light-well and protected tree, the project had a number of design challenges. The client also wanted the garden to have a more "wild" than manicured feel while also providing year-round vistas through the glass wall.

An olive tree provides the central focal point - as all plants had to come through the property, careful sourcing was key to ensure the olive would fit through the front door! Flemish bricks were used for the paths providing texture and interest while being lightweight. A glass balustrade around the light-well ensures views are uninterrupted. White walls and trellis bring light and tensioned wires support evergreen climbers to green up the tall wall. An old magnolia with a preservation order was incorporated into the new scheme and provides some valuable height and structure. Beautiful planters, funky lighting, a fire pit and furniture adds a modern feel, while a carefully planned lighting scheme brings the garden to life at night.
