GARDEN DESIGN
Creating beautiful, practical outdoor spaces to use and enjoy
Dorset Barn Garden
The re-development of two barns at right angles to each other led to the creation of a new courtyard garden. Set at the edge of a West Dorset village in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the site has fantastic views towards mature oak woods and an iconic hill. The new design needed to maximise the views of the landscape, while creating an intimate, practical garden space for outdoor eating, entertaining and relaxing.
A number of glass doors and windows providing both access and vistas into the courtyard needed to be accommodated into the design and provided an initial framework to work from. The central design element is a long rill of water creating a strong focal point from the main property. Edged with lavender, the rill is also planted with waterlilies to soften the hard landscaping. A planter overflows with water to bring a gentle sound of water into the space.
A paved terrace area divided into seating and eating areas is set amongst large planting beds. Planted with multi-stem Amelanchiers, tall grasses, roses and perennials the planting creates a feeling of enclosure and surrounds the terrace with colour and scent.
Slatted timber trellis screens provide privacy, act as plant supports for climbers while also referencing the woodland beyond. Steps lead to planted terraces and the wider garden where a wildflower bank, Orchard and grass
paths provide visual links to the wider landscape beyond.
